When considering the advantages of studying in Turkey, one is inevitably drawn to the question: Why Turkey?

Turkey offers a unique living experience, where diverse cultures, religions, and lifestyles converge harmoniously, enriching one’s personal growth and worldview.

Furthermore, Turkey stands out as one of the most affordable destinations for both living and studying. Compared to other countries offering similar quality education, the cost of studying in Turkey is notably lower, effectively halving monthly expenses. Affordable housing and dining options further contribute to the overall affordability.

Moreover, Turkey’s active participation in the European Higher Education system since 2001 ensures that degrees obtained here carry global recognition and respect. Thanks to the Bologna Process, diplomas earned in Turkey hold validity worldwide, enhancing graduates’ career prospects both within and beyond Turkey’s borders.

With a Turkish degree in hand, graduates unlock abundant job opportunities in international corporations, both within Turkey and abroad, owing to the universally recognized credential they possess. This international recognition adds significant value to the educational journey and opens doors to a myriad of professional pathways.

Requierements and Conditions

What are the requirements for studying in Turkey?

You must attend the YÖS examination of individual universities in order to study in Turkey.YÖS examinations of selected universities are valid at several universities.
The YÖS exam at Istanbul University is valid at almost every university in Turkey.

Meaning: their last 3 annual certificates or degrees must be obtained outside of Turkey.

  • Double citizens may also take the YÖS exam and start studying in Turkey.
  • All other citizenships are also allowed in the YÖS exam.
  • You must either have a higher education entrance qualification or a degree equivalent to the Lise degree.
  • If you do not have a Baccalaureate (Matura) or equivalent, you may also have an Acik-lise-diplomasi (Turkish High School of Anadolu University).

Fees and Expenses

What are the prerequisites for studying in Turkey?

To pursue higher education in Turkey, several requirements must be met:

  1. YÖS Examination: Prospective students are typically required to take the YÖS (Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı) examination administered by individual universities. Some universities accept the YÖS scores from other institutions, with Istanbul University’s exam recognized by many across the country.

  2. Educational Background: Applicants must have completed at least the last three years of their education outside Turkey or Northern Cyprus. This means their most recent certificates or degrees should be obtained from institutions outside Turkey. Even Turkish citizens who haven’t obtained a high school degree in Turkey must have spent a minimum of three years studying outside the country. Dual citizens are also eligible to take the YÖS exam and enroll in Turkish universities. Additionally, students must possess either a higher education entrance qualification or a diploma equivalent to the Turkish Lise degree.

  3. Alternative Qualifications: Those without a Baccalaureate (Matura) or equivalent may opt for an Acik-lise-diplomasi (Turkish High School Diploma) from Anadolu University.

Regarding the cost of studying in Turkey, it’s a key concern for students and their families. Turkey stands out as an affordable option for both living and studying. Rental costs are notably lower compared to countries like Germany, with food expenses also being generally cheaper.

Accommodation options include university dormitories, which are often the preferred choice for foreign students. Rent for these dormitories typically averages around 500.00 TL (approximately €120). Many students supplement their expenses with part-time jobs, and fluency in languages like English or German can provide a competitive edge in securing such opportunities.

In terms of duration, Bachelor’s programs in Turkey typically follow a standard period of study of four years, with exceptions such as Dentistry (5 years), Human Medicine (6 years), Veterinary Medicine (5 years), and Law (4 years). Engineering programs also generally span four years.

Language proficiency is a common concern among international students in Turkey, but many universities offer bilingual curricula to address

this issue. In Turkey, Turkish is typically the primary scientific language, followed by English as the secondary language. Additionally, some universities also offer courses in German or French as scientific languages.

For students requiring additional language preparation, some institutions may mandate a language preparation year, known as “hazırlık yılı” in Turkish. However, this requirement can often be bypassed if students pass language exams in the second language.

Students who successfully pass language proficiency exams for their non-native language or whose language of instruction is not Turkish can also skip the language preparation year. This proficiency exam ensures that students are adequately prepared to engage with the curriculum without the need for additional language training.

While some students may need to undergo language preparation, many will find that they can bypass this requirement through proficiency exams or by fulfilling language criteria specific to their desired programs and universities.

Application to Turkish universities

When applying to Turkish universities, it’s essential to understand the admission requirements. While it’s possible to apply with just a high school diploma, the chances of acceptance are typically lower without additional qualifications such as the YÖS exam results.

We strongly advise students to take the YÖS exam to improve their chances of admission. For certain programs like Medicine, taking the YÖS exam is mandatory.

At Anadolu Consultants, we have been assisting students for over 32 years in preparing for the YÖS exam. Our experienced team guides students through the application process, liaising with universities and providing invaluable support.

Foreign student admissions are typically handled directly by the universities themselves. We recommend reaching out to us for personalized assistance with the application process. Our team communicates with university authorities and maintains close ties with International Offices, ensuring a smooth application experience for our clients.

For further information, we encourage students to explore the official websites of their desired universities and contact the International Offices for any inquiries. Our dedicated team is also available to address any questions or concerns, providing comprehensive support throughout the application journey.

Diploma Evaluation – Recognition

Is your degree recognized in Turkey? This is a common question among students considering studying abroad.

To determine the recognition of your qualifications acquired in Turkey, you can consult the Foreign Offices’ website, where you’ll find information on whether your professional credentials are recognized.

It’s important to note that immigrants generally have a legal entitlement to have their qualifications acquired abroad evaluated to ascertain their equivalence to a German degree.

Based on our extensive experience, we’ve observed that degrees obtained in Turkey are typically recognized. However, graduates may need to complete certain procedures post-graduation, depending on their field of study.

For specific guidance on recognition processes, we recommend consulting relevant authorities such as the Recognition in Germany website, where you can find comprehensive information tailored to your individual circumstances.
